Hello dear readers,
While welcoming my patients at the clinic, one of the most common requests I receive is the desire for pearly white and straight teeth. Undeniably, an aesthetic smile is everyone's right; however, it should not be forgotten that even the most beautiful building must rise on a solid foundation. In dentistry, this "foundation" is our gums.
"If your gums are not healthy, it doesn't matter how white your teeth are. A healthy smile starts with pink and firm gums."
What are Gum Diseases?
Medically known as periodontal diseases, these are inflammatory conditions that affect the tissues surrounding and supporting our teeth. It usually begins with the accumulation of bacterial plaque on tooth surfaces due to inadequate oral care. If this plaque is not cleaned, it turns into tartar (calculus) and paves the way for gum disease.
Watch Out for These Symptoms!
Gum diseases can progress silently. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, your gums might be calling for help:
- Bleeding during brushing or when eating hard foods.
- Swelling, redness, and sensitivity in the gums.
- Receding gums (teeth appearing longer than normal).
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth.
- Loose teeth or new gaps forming between teeth over time.
Ways to Prevent Gum Disease
Protecting your gums is actually easier than you think. Here are the golden rules to add to your daily routine:
1. Correct Brushing Technique: Brush gently at least twice a day with a soft brush, at a 45-degree angle to the gum line.
2. Interdental Cleaning: Use dental floss or an interdental brush to clean plaque where the toothbrush cannot reach.
3. Regular Check-ups: A professional dental cleaning and check-up every six months is the most effective way to prevent problems before they grow.
4. Lifestyle Habits: Eat a balanced diet and avoid smoking, which directly threatens gum health.
Healthy and happy smiles to you all.
